SB 642 – Defend the Guard

SB 642 – Defend the Guard

Too often in recent years, our great nation has become embroiled in “forever wars” and secret conflicts all around the globe. These conflicts often sidestep the U.S. Constitution’s requirement regarding declaration of war, and the results have been disastrous.

When the federal government rushes headlong into these foreign misadventures, they rely on the states to provide personnel from our National Guard units. They send our most valuable resource — the brave men and women of our armed forces — to die in foreign lands, often without giving a second thought to the constitutionality of their actions or the impact on our communities.

Senate Bill 642 is entitled the “Defend the Guard Act.”

This bill would protect the Michigan National Guard by not releasing them into active-duty combat unless Congress has passed an official declaration of war or has acted under the U.S. Constitution to call forth the state militia. This bill would not only protect Michiganders, but it would also create an important check on the federal government and the military-industrial complex.

I hope you will agree with me that this bill would be a step in the right direction — a step toward peace through strength. We must support our military personnel (and our veterans), and one of the best ways to do that is by ensuring they are not called into unnecessary conflict that has not been properly authorized.
